Biography

Alice Arlene Garris–Applewhite, 74, of Vian, Oklahoma, passed away in Vian on November 20, 2023. Alice was born in Gore, Oklahoma, to Elmer and Bertha Elizabeth McConnell (Noel) on May 4, 1949. She attended Gore High School. For the better part of her life, she worked in the restaurant industry but held several jobs, but the most important to her was being a loving and caring mother. Her hobbies included doing puzzle books, playing cards, and beating us all at dominoes. Alice was an avid bowler in her early adult life, leading to her meeting and creating lifelong friends. She was very passionate about her family and those close to her.

Alice is survived by her sons, Jason Garris and Brent and LeeAnn Garris; her brothers, Charles McConnell and Gary and Ronna McConnell; her brother-in-law, Robert Risley; her beloved grandchildren, Spencer Garris, Lillie Garris, Brooklyn Garris, Preston Garris, Aaliyah Garris, Adilynn Garris, Harper Garris, her great-grandchildren, Jaxon McMurtry, and Grayson McMurtry.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Bertha, and her brothers and sisters, Susie McConnell, Clyde McConnell, Lahoma Cassinger, Mike McConnell, Emma Risley, Bonnie Terrell, and Bill McConnell.

Visitation will be from 4:00– 8:00 PM on Sunday, November 26, 2023, in the Sequoyah Memorial Chapel at Forever Memories Funeral Services in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Vian, Oklahoma, with Pastor Steve Spyres officiating. The final resting place will be the Garden of Memories in Vian, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers are Beau Burlison, Jack Brown, Jason McWaters, Mark Risley, Charles Risley, and Chad Harris. Honorary Pallbearers are Johnny Terrell, Darrell Terrell, and her grandsons, Spencer Garris and Preston Garris.

The family of Mrs. Alice Garris-Applewhite entrusted the funeral arrangements to Forever Memories Funeral Services.

  1. I’m so sorry for the loss of your mother. She was a special person to us and we’re so honored to had the opportunity to care for her. We will be forever thankful for entrusting Vian Nursing Rehab with care of Alice Applewhite.

  2. So sorry to hear of Alice’s passing. We were neighbors at one time. I knew her to be a hard worker and all for the good of her family. My.thoughts and prayers to her family and friends. RIP Alice.

  3. I was so sad to hear of my old friend & classmates passing. The class of 1968 lost two classmates the same day. RIP Alice. We love & miss you.
