Biography

Lola M. McElhaney Wright passed from this earth on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at her home in Vian, OK, surrounded by her loving family.

Lola was born on July 31, 1949, near Notchetown, Oklahoma, to George and Maggie McElhaney. Lola was the 10th child of 16 children in the McElhaney family. Some of her earliest memories were babysitting, cooking, and caring for her brothers and sisters. She loved and cared deeply for all of her family.

Lola graduated from Vian High School and married Terry Wright on October 17, 1967. They lived their early years together in Vian, OK.

She loved all of her family unconditionally and was known for her gardening, cooking, canning, giving haircuts and caring for anyone that needed her help. She was the glue of her family; sitting with those who were sick, lending a helping hand, and doing whatever was needed for her family and friends. She helped her husband Terry care for the farm by raising cattle and tending to the home.

She will be dearly missed by all, including those who knew her so well.

Surviving family members include her husband of 55 years, Terry Wright, of the home; three daughters, Lisa Wright of AR, Sherry and husband Michael Rouse of Vian, OK, Charlotte and husband Trent Trotter of Vian, OK; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Smith of Tulsa, OK, Ida Comtois of OKC, OK, and Jesse Still of Stilwell, OK; three brothers, Jerry McElhaney of Vian, OK, Silas McElhaney of Vian, OK, and Clifford McElhaney of Vian, OK; three sisters-in-law, Dixie and Raymond Cato of Wichita, KS, Mary and Dan Sheffield of Emory, TX, and Shirley Wright of Vian, OK.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Maggie McElhaney; two sisters, Brenda Lalla, and Nancy Thomas, and eight brothers, Lee, Loyd, Joe, Albert, John, Jimmy, Claude, and Sam.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, from 4-8 PM in the Sequoyah Memorial Chapel of Forever Memories Funeral Services in Sallisaw, OK.

A funeral service for Lola will take place on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Vian, OK, at 1 PM.

Interment will follow at Box Cemetery in Vian.

Casket bearers will be her grandsons, Luke Morris, Terry Sweeney, Gage Rouse, Tyler Wright, Tee Jay Trotter, and Tuff Trotter. Alternates are Taylor Sweeney and Randy Ballard.

  1. Lola was such a sweet lady. We have known each other for many years and she still always gave me a hug every time we saw each other. I will miss her and so will so many others – her family and friends. My thoughts and prayers for everyone. May she Rest In Peace, as she surely deserves it.
