Biography

Howard Clarence McCoy, 83, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, passed away on May 31, 2023, at his home in Sallisaw. Howard was born to Clarence Howard McCoy and Mildred Wilder in Longvale, California, on February 20, 1940. Howard was a proud United States Army, Vietnam 101st Airborne Veteran. After his service in the military, Howard began truck driving and was a cross-country truck driver. He was the last surviving author of the tribal constitution of the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians of California. This tribal constitution enabled the members to establish their tribe. Howard was the elder of his generation; he was admired and very well respected. Many generations after him looked up to him for guidance and the history of their tribal heritage. He adored his wife of 39 years, Martha Rose (Burton) McCoy. He loved his cats and dogs. A true patriot to the end, he enjoyed his time with Carnie Welch; Post 27 American Legion, in particular his friendships with Bobbie Duvall, Larry Boatright, and Kathy Albertson-Shelton.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Martha; his children, Ruthie McCoy, Cheryl John, Regina McCoy, and Rachael McCoy and his sister-in-law, Pat Todd Catchpole, numerous grandkids, great grandkids, nieces and nephews that he was very proud of.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Luella and Leola, his brother Raymond Sheppard and his daughters, Sofia McCoy, Rogina Valentine, Lisa Fred, and Phyllis Razo.

Howard’s celebration of life and full military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 08, 2023, in the Sequoyah Memorial Chapel at Forever Memories Funeral Services.
